Physiotherapy Management Of Cystic Fibrosis
Introduction
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is an autosomal recessive disorder that affects 1-in-2500 newborns in the UK. It is a life-limiting illness with respiratory complications being the most significant cause of both mortality and morbidity. Major advances over the past 60 years in the management of CF have resulted in dramatic improvements in longevity and survival, in what was for many years considered to be a paediatric disease. The predicted median survival is now over 30, however respiratory dysfunction continues to be the main contributory factor to the morbidity and mortality associated with this disorder.
Physiotherapy is an integral part of the management of CF Airway clearance was, when the disease was first described, the mainstay of respiratory management and continues to play an integral role. However, with changing disease patterns from infancy to adulthood, the role of physiotherapy in this disorder has altered significantly and is no longer limited to airway clearance but also emphasises the importance of physical exercise, postural care and addresses the unique complications which are emerging as longevity improves.
This course will focus on giving you a greater understanding of the relevant anatomy, function, pathophysiology, assessment, and treatment related to CF.

Aims of the course
This course aims to:
1. Concisely deliver knowledge on the relevant anatomy, function, and pathophysiology of all the anatomical structures associated with CF
2. Enhance your understanding of assessing patients with CF
3. Enhance your understanding of numerous conventional and emerging therapeutic interventions for CF
4. Provide holistic knowledge on managing CF by discussing basic pharmacological management and minimally invasive procedures
